How To Manually Tune TV Channels

Setup ToolNormally your myPVR arrives with all of its TV Channels preloaded. For some parts of NZ we don’t know all of the correct frequencies so you might need to perform the following manual steps.

This guide is also useful in areas where your reception is borderline. By using the built in channel scanner you should be able to get a much better channel lock. Please make sure you are using a keyboard to perform these steps as you will need to type a couple of commands.

First make sure that you have no pending recordings, and then exit the main myPVR gui so that the myPVR Welcome page is displayed.

You can then activate the MythTV Set-up Tool by pressing Alt + S on the keyboard, which should show the menus in the screenshot to the right.

Note that when initiall entering the setup tool you will get a warning because the MythTV backend is still running. It is safe to ignore this error providing you have no recordings in progress.

Step 4 Check the new channels

In order to get the channels to map to the correct icon and EPG data you will need to manually check which channels you want. For example in Auckland myPVR will find the encrypted Sky UHF channels in some areas, and these can’t be displayed.

You now need to exit the MythTV set-up tool (by pressing the back or escape key), and restart the main myPVR Gui.

Enter LiveTV and make sure you select an analogue input (you may need to press the “Y” key on your keyboard”). Then work through the new channels so you know which ones need to be deleted and which are a correct TV Channels.

This is more complicated if you also have the SkyTV channels loaded as there will initially be some duplicate channel numbers. The newly loaded channels can be easily identified as their channel name starts with “Adding Channel”.

The table below is for the Waiatarua transmitter in Auckland as an example. Create your own copy of this table detailing which channels you wish to delete, and which require an apporpriate XMLTV ID value to be set.

Sisplayed Channel Name Callsign XMLTV ID

Step 5 Delete unwanted channels

Auckland Channel Scan Now that you know the correct channels for your area you need to restart the the MythTV Set-up tool by pressing “Alt + S” and select the Channel Editor. Then make sure your Video Source is “myPVR NZ” and you are sorted by “Channel Number”.

Once again select any unwanted channels, and press ‘d’ on the keyboard to remove them.

Once finished you should have a shortened list similar to the screenshot on the right.

Step 6 Map Channels to correct XMLTV ID

Channel Options The XMLTV ID is used to track the channels, and makes sure each channel gets the correct EPG information.

For each of your channels you will need to select the channel and press enter to bring up the channel options screen. The only entry you need to edit on this screen is the XMLTV entry. Based on the table in Step 4 enter the correct XMLTV ID, making sure that the case is preserved. This is very important as otherwise you will not get any EPG data for this channel.

Then press “Next” and “Finish” to complete the channel update.

If you have a TV channel that isn’t in the above list please contact OpenMedia support for more details.

Setup ToolStep 7 Finalise the Channel Layout

Now that you have set-up all of the XMLTV IDs, exit the Channel Editor and return to the main MythTV Set-up screen as shown to the right.

The next step is to update all of the channel information based on the XMLTV IDs, and also make sure the channel icons are correct. To do this you need to enter a couple of commands on the keyboard.

Press Alt+X on the keyboard to bring up a terminal window. In this window you need to type the following command

/usr/local/share/myPVR/tools/mypvr_nz_terrestrial.sh refresh

This should result in the following output

Refreshing Layout based on XMLTV IDs

Then type exit to close the terminal window.

Remapped ChannelsStep 8 Confirm Channels Are Mapped Correctly

The active screen should be the MythTV Set-up tool active again.

Select the channel editor and make sure your Video Source is “myPVR NZ” and you are sorted by “Channel Number”.

You should now see an ordered set of channels. If some of your channels are incorrectly mapped or still have the wrong name go back to steps 6+7 and check your XMLTV IDs are correct.

Once you are happy exit the MythTV Set-up tool, and use LiveTV in the main myPVR gui to confirm your channels are set-up correctly.
